Returned to Churchill's Marlborough, interrupted owing to Mary's inability to read aloud. It is the most expensive book in history. Winston should not have had the leisure to write it, but should have been in office,(1) in which case England would have been so well armed that Germany would not have dared to disobey her, or having done so, would soon have had to yield. As it is, England is spending billions, where tens of millions, or a few hundred millions, would have sufficed. But Anglo-Saxons are not military minded, and will not believe in war until it is upon them.

Ripreso il Marlborough di Churchill, interrotto per l'incapacità di Mary di leggere ad alta voce. È il libro più caro della storia. Winston non avrebbe dovuto prendersi il tempo di scriverlo, ma avrebbe dovuto restare in carica,(1) nel qual caso l'Inghilterra sarebbe stata così ben armata che la Germania non avrebbe osato disobbedirle o, se l'avesse fatto, avrebbe dovuto arrendersi presto. E invece l'Inghilterra sta spendendo miliardi, mentre decine di milioni o qualche centinaia di milioni sarebbero stati più che sufficienti. Ma gli anglosassoni non hanno una mentalità militare e non credono nella guerra finché non ci sono dentro.
